In 2019, Telford & Wrekin Council declared a climate emergency. It is now working, along with partners, to go carbon neutral by 2030 – and to reduce single-use plastic across the council by 2023!

Becoming a Carbon Neutral Borough

As well as our commitment for the Council’s operations to be carbon neutral by 2030, our aim is for the whole Borough to be carbon neutral by the same date.  We can’t do this on our own, and we recognise and welcome the amazing work that a growing number of local organisations are already doing to tackle climate change - to see their case studies click here. We’ve joined forces with businesses, Parish & Town Councils, community groups, schools, universities and others to form the Telford & Wrekin Climate Change Partnership.

Current members of the Borough Partnership are:

  • Craemer
  • Environment Agency
  • Hollinswood Primary School & Nursery
  • Inter-faith Council
  • Marches Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP)
  • Lyreco
  • Marches Energy Agency
  • Midlands Energy Hub
  • Parish Forum
  • Ricoh
  • Shropshire Association of Local Councils (SALC)
  • Severn Gorge Countryside Trust
  • Shropshire Wildlife Trust
  • Small Woods Association
  • Sustainable Newport
  • Telford & Wrekin Council
  • Telford & Wrekin Mayor
  • Telford Greenspace Partnership
  • Transition Telford
  • University of Wolverhampton
  • Veolia

The Partnership is now developing its own action plan to help tackle climate change Borough-wide through six sub-groups.  The sub-groups enable us to look in more detail at specific themes and get even more organisations and local experts involved.  The sub-group themes are:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use
  • Buildings
  • Energy Systems
  • Industry
  • Learning, Communication and Engagement
  • Transport

We would like to thank our partners for their involvement and participation in this work.  We will be consulting local residents about the draft Borough action plan once completed.

Becoming a Plastic Free Borough

We’re also working alongside the Telford & Wrekin Plastic Free Taskforce to work towards our goal of becoming a certified Plastic Free Community www.sas.org.uk/plastic-free-communities.  Current members of the Taskforce are:

  • AO
  • Great Dawley Town Council
  • Harper Adams University
  • Hollinswood Primary School
  • Ironbridge Gorge Business Consortium
  • Madeley Town Council
  • Oakengates Town Council

  • Telford Priory School
  • Telford Shopping Centre
  • The Gorge Parish Council

  • University of Wolverhampton
  • Veolia
  • Wellington Town Council

The Taskforce are using toolkits from Surfers against Sewage to reduce single-use plastics in businesses, schools and community buildings, as well as organising action days and campaigns to spread the word to residents.

Thank you to all our partners in the Climate Change Partnership and the Plastic Free Taskforce for helping to build a thriving, carbon neutral, climate resilient community where all our local residents and organisations actively contribute to and benefit from a more sustainable future.
